Old Arkansas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Investigation Date

May 10, 2008

History

From its inception in 1908 to its closing in 1973, literally thousands have gone through the gates of the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium.

When Judge Hill, Dr. Meriwether, and Senator Oldham met with then-governor George W. Donahey to present the plans for the Sanatorium, it was thought the mountain location and fresh air would be beneficial to the recovery of the infected.

Between 1956 and 1958, there were 3,958 patients admitted for observation and treatment. The Sanatorium was built and designed to be a self-sufficient community having Doctors offices, patient housing, chapel, cafeteria, water supply, fire department, and more.

During its peak in the early 1900s, Tuberculosis had a fatality rate of about 80 percent and many of those who passed through the gates in hopes of treatment or a cure passed on instead to another existence. The Sanatorium has been considered one of the State's most active paranormal hotspots for many years.

Questionable Photos

There's something odd in the hallway in this photograph. There is a black blob, but nothing hanging in the hall when this photograph was taken.

This is a comparison shot of the blow, the first one blown up.

There appears to be a figure at the end of the hallway, you have to blow the picture up to see it.

This is a comparison shot, the above referenced figure blown up. It was stated it could be a reflection, however we have never seen this repeat itself in trips to this location. We tried to recreate it at a later date, and failed. This also does not look anything like the girl who took the photo. We thought it was strange and noteworthy.

Personal Experiences

Two investigators were on the fourth floor as the sun was going down. They observed movement at one end of the hallway and constant noises that were unexplained when a group went to check them out. Also there was a light on in one room of the building where a glow was coming from a monitor. The two investigators saw a shadow break the light in that room on two separate occasions, when they rushed to the room, no one was there.

Scratches were heard in the cage, no source was found.
